The youngest of the children born to Carl Jorden, I and Amelia Deppe, Emma was born in Missouri on January 14, 1897. Emma married William “Billy” Schroeder, date and place unknown. Billy was a veteran of World War I. Their union produced 4 children; Edwin born in 1921, Herbert born in 1922, Tiny born in 1923 and Alfred born in 1924. Alfred fought in World War II and died at 20 years of age March, 1945. Emma herself died September 14, 1939 at 42 years old.
I know little about Emma, except that our Bill spent a great deal of time with them after his mother Regina left the family. Five boys would have been a lot for anyone to handle but something tells me that Emma did it with grace and strength. I just love this photo taken of her. It appears to have been taken around 1915 based on the type of dress she’s wearing and her appearance. She would have been 18 then, just starting out on her life.

While we can’t tell what type of jewelry she’s wearing it appears she has some sort of brooch or bobble there at her neck. I find myself wish I could see her bow as it appears quite large. And the lace of her skirt and shirt are exquisite. With just a hint of her shoe, I feel somehow we could tell more about her were we able to see her shoes. And her pose is that which mimic’s her sister-in-law’s Regina with Emma’s brother our Bill. While Regina had her hands clasps, Emmas pose is open and welcoming as if to say “I’ve saved a spot for you.” Thank you for the chair Emma and for all the care you gave our Bill.
Yes, Emma, thank you SO much for the love & care you gave my Dad. Your love has rippled into our generation & beyond. Tiny loved your farm SO mich & was always an impeccable host. Thanks across the generations!
